When you pick up a bottle of perfume and read its description "opens with bergamot, a heart of jasmine, and a base of sandalwood" that's the fragrance's note structure. Understanding it changes everything about how you choose, wear, and fall in love with a scent.
A fragrance isn't a single, static smell. It's a composition that evolves over time on your skin, moving through three distinct stages.
First 15–30 minutes
The opening impression. Usually bright and fresh — citrus, light herbs, green notes. Volatile molecules that evaporate quickly. What you smell in the shop is almost always the top note.
30 minutes – 3 hours
The true character of the fragrance. Florals, spices, and richer aromatics emerge here. This is the soul of what a perfumer designed — the identity of the scent.
3 hours onwards
The lasting impression. Woods, musks, resins, oud. These deep, heavy molecules anchor the fragrance and linger longest. Your signature scent lives here.
Why this matters when you're shopping
Most people make the mistake of deciding on a fragrance within seconds of spraying it. But what you smell in those first moments — the top note — is often the least representative part of the scent. It burns off quickly. The fragrance you'll actually be wearing all day is the heart and base.
"Never buy a fragrance in the first five minutes. Wait for the dry-down — that's the real perfume."
This is especially true of richer EDP and Parfum concentrations, which are formulated to have complex, evolving dry-downs. A Dior or Chanel EDP that opens sharp and fresh can settle into something warm, velvety, and completely different after an hour on your skin.
How Sri Lanka's heat plays a role
In a warm climate, top notes evaporate even faster. What this means practically is that fragrances reach their heart and base notes more quickly here — which is actually a good thing. You spend more time in the beautiful, complex part of the scent rather than the fleeting opening.
When you get Rebel, we'll always encourage you to wear a fragrance for at least 20 minutes before deciding. Our full range of niche and designer fragrances available in Sri Lanka is here to be explored.. not rushed.
